Reform Jews Across the Country Participate in National Call-In Day for Darfur

On the occasion of a National “Call-In Day for Darfur,” Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, issued the following statement noting, "It is vital that we continue to put pressure on our elected officials to follow through on their promise to stop the atrocities that are occurring in Darfur."

Washington, December 6, 2005 – On the occasion of a National “Call-In Day for Darfur,” Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:
In conjunction with the Save Darfur Coalition, the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism is today participating in a National “Call-In” Day to urge our
government to do everything within its power to bring an end to what both Congress and the President have called genocide in Darfur. A similar National Call-In Day was staged in early October, and its success was overwhelming. Soon after, the Senate unanimously passed its version of the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act. It is vital that we continue to put pressure on our elected officials to follow through on their promise to stop the atrocities that are occurring in Darfur.
We have called upon the entire Reform Movement, and especially its Rabbis, to participate in this event by contacting their elected officials and asking them both to pass the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act in the House and to include $50 million for the African Union in the Defense Appropriations Conference Report.
As Jews, we are intimately acquainted with what happens when otherwise good people are silent in the face of political oppression and violence. After years of violence, the people of Darfur can wait no longer for the world to take promised action. Often it only takes a small action to bring about great change. The late Senator Paul Simon once said that if only 100 people in each Congressional district had contacted their elected officials about the Rwandan genocide, there would have been a greater determination to stop it. By participating in the National Call-In Day for Darfur, we are taking the necessary steps to ensure that we do not make the mistake of indifference.
We will not allow our government to forget the people of Darfur.
The Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism is the Washington office of the Union for Reform Judaism, whose more than 900 congregations across North America encompass 1.5 million Reform Jews, and the Central Conference of American Rabbis, whose membership includes more than 1800 Reform rabbis.
