More than half the U.S. Senators fete AIPAC

Mar 7, 2006

More than half the U.S. Senate attended a gala dinner Monday night for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

More than 5,000 people attended the dinner at the Washington Convention Center, including 57 senators and 123 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, and over 1,000 college students. Envoys from over 80 countries attended, including Oman, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The delegates will spend Tuesday lobbying on Capitol Hill for bills that would increase the isolation of Hamas and Iran.

Speakers at the conference included Vice President Dick Cheney, congressional leaders from both parties and four likely 2008 presidential candidates: Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.); John Edwards, the 2004 Democratic vice presidential candidate; Newt Gingrich, the former Republican House speaker; and Mark Warner, the former Democratic governor of Virginia.
